Although most people tend to think of Hemel Hempstead as a post-World War II new town, its history can be traced back as far as the 8th century. Its origins are still evident in the quaint Medieval buildings in the Old Town and the Norman church that lies at its heart. Although just 35 miles from London, the town is picturesque and surrounded by enough greenery to make you forget that the capital even exists.
